Accountability is part of our mission.
MEF is committed to responsible stewardship of every dollar this community entrusts to us. Our annual reports show you exactly how we've used it.
MEF publishes an annual program and financial summary covering every grant made, every program funded, and our full income and expense statement. We believe donors deserve to know precisely where their money goes. These reports are our commitment to that transparency.
JANUARY 2024 - JUNE 2024
In six months, MEF went from concept to corporation. We legally established the foundation, built a board, secured $353,100 in City of Malibu seed funding — supplemented by $150,000 in SMMUSD instructional aide offsets — funded instructional aides and art teachers at both elementary schools, and launched Malibu Middle School Athletics, a program that would grow to serve 60% of the school within a year.
Total community investment: $503,100 Funds granted to programs: $390,193 Overhead: $21,000 — 95% of spending went directly to students
Remaining funds carried forward to support Year 2 operations and staffing.
JULY 2024 - JUNE 2025
This was the year MEF became real. We earned our 501(c)(3), launched publicly, and built a full program portfolio from scratch — while three wildfires tore through our community. We didn't pause. Middle school athletics was already serving 60% of the school before we officially launched, and every program was in place when the bell rang on day one. At year's end, MEF had raised $200,229 through events, partnerships, and direct donations.
Total community investment: $712,769 Funds committed to programs: $776,957 Operating costs: $85,318 — 90% of spending went directly to students
Note: $275,000 in staff billing from SMMUSD is pending reconciliation and will be settled in the 2025-26 school year. All programs ran without interruption.
