The Malibu Education Foundation (MEF) provides a vital way for our community to invest in high-quality public education for all Malibu students.

School site needs—such as instructional support, academic intervention, and arts education— are identified by site leaders, including principals and PTA representatives, in alignment with SMMUSD policies. These needs are communication to MEF during regular Superintendent Advisory Community (SAC) meetings, where district and school leadership come together.

Each year,MEF evaluates the priorities and determines, based on fundraising capacity, which grants can be supported. Grant commitments for the following school year are confirmed by February. These commitments help set MEF’s annual fundraising goals.

With a formal Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) in place with SMMUSD, MEF is the only organization in Malibu authorized to fund school staffing—from instructional aides to arts teachers to specialized academic support. This ability to commit to long-term staff funding sets MEF apart.

Malibu schools face unique funding challenges, including lower enrollment and difficulty recruiting staff due to cost of living and geography. These factors make it more expensive to maintain parity with other districts. MEF plays a critical role in bridging that gap, ensuring Malibu students receive the enriched, well-rounded education they deserve.

HOW MEF Funding complements Local support

The Malibu Education Foundation (MEF) focuses on funding the long-term staffing needs of Malibu’s public schools—providing stability for essential roles and programs. This complements the work of our partner PTAs and The Shark Fund, which raise site-specific funds for current-year supplies, events, and enrichment opportunities.

ENDOWMENTS: FUNDING THE FUTURE

The Van Dyke Endowment for the Arts

Launched in partnership with The Shark Fund, this endowment was funded through the June 2024 community event and theater seat dedications. Now managed by MEF, it provides annual interest-based funding for Visual and Performing Arts programs across all Malibu schools—in perpetuity.

The MEF Endowment

Our newest initiative, the MEF Endowment, is designed to build a sustainable principal fund that will secure the core staff roles our schools rely on, year after year.

TRANSPARENCY & GROWTH: A FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE

The Malibu Education Foundation (MEF) was launched with seed funding from both the City of Malibu and SMMUSD as part of a three-year strategy to build a sustainable, community-supported foundation. MEF is on track to become self-funded by 2027.

Fundraising Efforts to Date Include:

  • Partnership with Malibu Moves

  • The Holiday Tree Lot

  • Food For Thought Series

  • Community-wide donation campaigns

MEF is committed to transparency. We submit quarterly reports to the Malibu City Council, which are publicly available on the City of Malibu website.

We also host an open annual board meeting each June, during which the board of directors is appointed and fundraising strategies for the upcoming year are reviewed and confirmed.

LEGACY OPPORTUNITIES

Malibu Education Foundation is actively developing opportunities for donors to leave a legacy for generations of students. These opportunities include:

  • Endowments: Contribute to our endowment programs to enable your donation to support students for years to come.

    • The Van Dyke Endowment for the Arts, established by The Shark Fund last summer with $200,000 in donations raised during a naming event to support Visual and Performing Arts Programs across all four schools, will be transferring to the Malibu Education Foundation this Fall 2025.

    • All donations made to the endowment will be invested to grow the endowment, and just the interest revenue used to support arts programs across schools - forever.

    • Together, we will continue to grow this endowment to support arts education for years to come!

  • Naming Opportunities: With our evolving campuses there are opportunities to for donor recognition through naming.

  • Planned Giving: Working with an established investment partner, there are multiple long-term giving strategies we are able to develop in partnership with donor.
